    Cross Country FAQs:
    What is cross country?
Races take place on open-air courses over natural terrain such as; grass, dirt, sand, hills, trails, creeks
and ditches. The races can vary in distances of 1kilometer to 4 kilometers for elementary and middle
school. In order to see progress and achieve success, running should be a year-round activity. Running is
one of the purest sports because it is challenges you both physically and mentally. You will test the limits
of your body and mind daily at practice and especially competing at meets.
How are cross county meets scored?
Each runner will either have a race bib (number) that is pinned on their jersey (in which the bottom half
is torn off as they walk through the finish chute) or they will receive a finish card in the finish chute.
Some races have “chips” that are tied to shoes or are imbedded into the race bib. The “chips” are
registered to your name and your start/ finish time.
Teams are made up of seven runners, although more can run in the races. The first five of the seven
runners on the team are the ones that count toward the team score. The runner’s finishing place
corresponds to the number of point(s) the runner earns. For example, if you place #4 in a race, you
earned 4 points. What makes cross country different from other sports is that you want the lowest
amount of points possible (like golf). A perfect score would be 1 st place, 2 nd place, 3 rd place, 4 th place and
5 th place which would be a total of 15 points. The sixth and seventh runners on the team are just as
important as the top five on the team. If a team is tied with us, the tiebreaker goes to the sixth runner
and what place they came in the race. The seventh runner plays a similar role when needed. In some
cases, if a team does not have a sixth runner, the team that has a sixth runner will get the win.
Is cross country really a team sport?
Yes, cross country is every bit a team sport as it is an individual sport. The collective individual effort
determines the team’s score. You have to work hard individually as well as together and push each
other to the best possible finish. In turn, you will see successful team results. Your ability to contribute
to the great good of the team is a life skill you will use in many situations throughout your career. Learn
it now and use it forever.
What equipment do I need for cross country?
Comfortable workout clothes and proper fitting running shoes. RUNNING SHOES, not just sneakers.
Female athletes will need proper fitting sports bras as well as comfortable workout clothes and proper
fitting running shoes. On speed days and race days, athletes may choose to wear racing flats. These
shoes are lighter and feel faster than the normal day-to-day trainers.
It is important to wear deodorant and if you suffer from skin chafing, apply chafing cream or Vasoline to
    the affected area.

    Cross Country Policies and Procedures:
The coaching staff has a responsibility to the student-athlete and the parent(s) to develop good
character including the “whole-person” concept. We will see to it that each student is a well-rounded,
contributing member of our Catholic community. We will do everything that we can to help mold you
into a champion (on the field and in life) including; providing the opportunity to participate in this great
sport and providing an efficient and healthy training program. We will institute discipline while building
strong work ethic We will always be fair, firm and consistent with our treatment of all student-athletes.
 All Trinity student-athletes will adhere to the policies set forth in the Trinity Catholic Student
    Handbook. https://www.trinityknights.org/Page/102
 All student-athletes will not have below a “C” in any class. This will be seen on progress reports
or at the final grading period. Remember you are a STUDENT-athlete, you are a student first and
an athlete second. Manage your time appropriately, set academic goals and make a plan to
achieve them. Prioritize your responsibilities and tasks.
    Team Behavior Expectations and Consequences:
It is an expectation that you are always a good sport and a good citizen. Be respectful and courteous at
all times. Show self-control and self-respect.
 It is an expectation that you speak in a respectful manner to adults at all times.
 It is an expectation that you will not disagree with a coach in public. It’s okay to disagree but not
in a public manner. Find the right and time to address concerns.
 Fighting results in immediate dismissal from the team.
 No trash talking or other bravado at meets, if so, you will personally apologize to your team and
the individual/team/ coach of the program that was disrespected by your actions. You will also
not run in the meet. Be a good sport at all times!
 It is an expectation that you have a positive and encouraging attitude at practice and at meets.
 It is an expectation that you will listen and follow directions the first time they are given.
 It is an expectation that you will keep hands, feet and objects to yourself at all times.
In the event you do not meet these expectations, you can be excused from the team. This will be up
to the coaching staff after meeting with parent(s) of student-athlete and student-athlete.
